Waterfront Style | Vivien of Holloway 1940s Swing Trousers

Waterfront Style | Vivien of Holloway 1940s Swing Trousers

A weekend getaway to windy Wellington requires a practical, yet stylish wardrobe. Something suitable for sunshine with blustery arctic breezes, waterfront strolls and eating waaaaay to much. I’m not one for wearing exercise gear when I’m not, well, exercising, so I opted for the clean lines and practical fabrics of 1940’s swing pants and a button down blouse.

* I wasn’t paid, sponsored or cajoled into writing the following post, just so ya know. However If you would like to sponsor, cajole or otherwise encourage me to review your product or service, please contact me here*

Waterfront Style in Vivien of Holloway green 1940's swing trousers. Velvet DeCollete is dressed in pinup style for the windy wellington waterfront wearing Vivien of Holloway, Collectif Clothing and vintage fashion.

I gotta tell you, these trousers are something special. I’m short in the legs, long in the torso and there’s a large disparity between my waist and hip measurements. But the Vivien of Holloway 1940’s swing trousers don’t care.

Apart from being 4cm too long – like every pair of pants ever – they fit beautifully! I’ll be shortening them and widening the cuff in the process, but for this look I was happy to wear a comfortable heel.
Based on a WWII era pattern these swing trousers are ACTUALLY high waisted. As in they go well above my belly button. The wide waistband is firm and doesn’t fold down or scrunch up ( woooohoo!) and front patch pocket is cute, if not overly useful. But what really sold me is the side button closure. Leaving a smooth panel over the stomach, it’s both classic and far more flattering than a bulky front zip.
( Can you tell I’m not a fan of front zips? Why are 90% of pants determined to make one’s tummy look bigger!?)

Pairing these green trousers with navy, off white and chocolate brown felt so right for a brisk oceanfront walk. I’m loving how the emerald green and deep blues reflect the water.

Oh and did I mention the pants are pretty easy care? I’ve just been chucking mine through the washing machine and line drying them. The fabric is durable enough for everyday wear without worrying about damage from pets or rough surfaces, which is great if you’ve got an energetic dog like mine! Wide leg trousers are such a versatile style. Wear them casual with a knit top, or dress them up with a sophisticated blouse and jewellery.

Things you might want to know about Vivien of Holloway 1940’s swing trousers…

  • In my experience the poly cotton fabric doesn’t stretch much, so choose your sizing carefully.
  • I’m 5.3″ and these are 4cm too long if I’m wearing flat shoes.
  • I’m wearing the VOH size 10 which nicely defines my 26″ waist. For comparison I normally wear an NZ 6-8 in pants, or an XS in Collectif.
  • The fabric was a bit… crispy? Possibly to hold the front creases while packed? I washed them before wearing to remove the extra starch so they’d hang well.
  • Vivien of Holloway makes swing trousers in at least four fabrics and around a dozen colours, most of which I’d love to add to my wardrobe! Especially the Teal and Ocean colourways.

Halloween Lookbook | Pinup Style Outfits for the Spookiest Month of the Year

Halloween Lookbook | Pinup Style Outfits for the Spookiest Month of the Year

It’s so close I can feel it ya’ll. Excitement is building like a sugar high as we approach the spookiest day of the year … All Hallows Eve. That delightful time when black and orange prevail, bats and spiders take centre stage and costumes are accepted as daily wear.

In honour of this celebration of spook, I dove head first into my wardrobe to make you a Halloween lookbook!
This is my first lookbook video, and my second video ever, so it’s got a (charming?) amateur-ity, but was so much fun to make. Created with clothes and accessories I already had, these outfits cover every occasion October might have to offer, from formal wear to haunted house visits. Fashion is fun, so watch the video for inspiration, push aside the monster in the closet and make your own Halloween style magic!

Pssst, I’ve included photos and info on the outfits below the video

Bride of Frankie

Forget lady killer, I’m a monster killer. Inspired by the Bride of Frankenstein’s distinctive black and white hair, the outfit is pure rockabilly badass. Black on Black speaks to my ex goth soul, and who doesn’t feel cooler in leather pants?

Shortly after my manical laughter, my dog Echo destroyed that monster head before pretending it exploded into a mountain of green fluff all on its own.

Puddin’

Okay so maybe I just wanted to pull my Harley Quinn  mallet out of retirement. I miss cosplay! Sans mallet, this outfit is super wearable and sassy. Put a wiggle in your walk and a giggle in your talk by dressing up a fitted dress with some red and black Halloween accessories. Easy!

The Pumpkin King

Or should I say the Pumpkin Queen? Inspired by my favourite Halloween movie The Nightmare Before Christmas, this outfit is pure haunted carnival fun. Orange, black and white is a classic Halloween colour combo, and always makes me think of candy corn, pumpkins and black cats!

Almost every piece of clothing in this outfit was thrifted or free. I think it cost about $40 NZD all up!

I couldn’t resist the old “surprised by fruit” pose that fashion models pulled out in the 1950’s!

Formally Frightening

If you needed an excuse to be a deliciously dark, gothic glamour oozing vamp, this is it. Morticia, Lily Munster and Elvira all knew the power of a slinky black dress. Is there anything more dangerously feminine?

It’ll come as no surprise that I love velvet. The way it drapes and absorbs light gives it a lush, deep appearance, perfect for seduction. As a texture loving person I adooooooore wearing anything this soft and strokeable.

Hell’s Belle

Your classic 1950’s comic book bad girl. Vixens in the 50’s were all curves, and so is this outfit. Designed by Micheline Pitt, the fetish print wiggle skirt pays tribute to the scandalous Bizarre magazines, John Willie and Bettie Page antics that inspire so many of my shoots. Paired with a pair of sharp batwing sunglasses and high shine black stilettos this witchy day outfit would be right at home on the cover of a pulp paperback emblazoned with “Sin Becomes Her”.

And there you have it! A lookbook of Halloween ready pinup and rockabilly outfits, mostly using thrifted or everyday clothes! Giving a look that extra creep factor can be as simple as pairing unusual colours or some oogie boogie accessories. Make the most of the Halloween spirit this October and have fun with your style!

Spiderweb Style | My Top 5 Picks for Halloween

Spiderweb Style | My Top 5 Picks for Halloween

Ever since Cheryl Blossom rocked that gigantic spider brooch in Riverdale, creepy crawlies have invaded the pinup world. Now with Halloween lurking around the corner, there’s no better time to fall under the spiderweb spell.

I treat everyday like Halloween ( fancy dress and candy anyone?), so I’ve had plenty of time to narrow down my 5 favourite spiderweb inspired clothes and accessories. Whether you’re after an everyday option or some spooky glamour for the Blood Moon Ball, you’ll feel at home as an arachnid in these web embellished treats.

*  Just so you know, I wasn’t hired, paid, sponsored, bribed or blackmailed to talk about these items, they’re legit my favourites *

Oooh and keep your eyes peeled for a special Halloween discount code!

Up first simply because I’ve been coveting it the longest, the Black Widow Skirt by NZ designer Devel Branded.

The Black Widow skirt ticks all my investment piece boxes:
Hardwearing? Check!
That spiderweb is heavy duty top stitching so it’s not going to flake  off in the wash or wear off over time like printed designs can do.
Versatile? Check!
I’ve seen this skirt rocked with a band tee and chucks, and glammed up with a blouse and heels. It really can go anywhere.

Ethical and made by a small business? Check!
Devel is passionate about creating ethical, quality clothing.  She makes every piece herself, I’ve seen her stuff first hand and it’s impeccable!

You can order yours now, or find more photos and backstory on the Black Widow skirt on the Devel branded blog.

Personally my favourite is the mermaid gown. I love how the spider web embroidery flares out from knee and sparkles on the bustline. Chic, darkly elegant, and showing off your curves in aaaaaalll the right places.

Even better, Honey is a local New Zeland based designer, when you buy from her you’re supporting a small business and an adorable pinup does a happy dance!

Are you seeing this? Or am I just imagining the world’s most perfect evening bag?

Ethically made by Bubble Witch, a small business based in Leeds, England, this acrylic clutch is inspired by 1940’s and 1950’s lucite purses.
That gloriously asymmetric spiderweb is carved in, then painted gold. It’s the kind of bag I imagine Vampira or Morticia Addams toting, so obviously I want it. Ideal for the pinup witch accessorising her evening gown, leather look wiggle dress or creepy cocktail ensemble.

While it’s pricier than I could normally justify for a bag, it brings me such ghoulish delight that it had to be in my top 5 Halloween picks. ( And let’s face it, I’d use it at every opportunity. )

You can pick the spiderweb purse up on the Bubble Witch Etsy store.

This freakin adorable skirt is the only mass produced item to make my top 5, modeled here by the drop dead gorgeous Teer of Curves to Kill .

We all go crazy for skirts with decent pockets, and the pocket detail is what sold me on this skirt! I love how the spider web design is worked around the pocket opening, and accented with the white hem piping. Super cute and wearable all year round.

Available in New Zealand from Napier supplier Two Lippy Ladies.
( The only reason I don’t already own this is that the smallest Hell Bunny size is too big in the waist for me, *sob* )

Within a somewhat more realistic budget are the cute cateye sunglasses with spiderweb pin striping below. Those are from Spitfire Interiors. I’ve seen various versions by different brands, so to be honest, they’re a completely do-able Halloween fashion DIY for those so inclined.

Like most of my top 5 spiderweb style picks, cobweb sunglasses are Halloween ready, but also a wearable wardrobe addition whatever the season!
