Start Your Engines | A Bad Girl Photo shoot

Start Your Engines | A Bad Girl Photo shoot

Bad girls have more fun. Especially with big shiny Cadillacs and skintight powermesh skirts.

This set was shot outside an imposing vintage venue, next to a busy dog walking park. That’s right, wholesome citizens innocently walking their dogs saw a lot more than they expected. But that’s kind of what we do right?

Stylewise this shoot is a mix of classic pin up and fetish inspired fashion. I wanted the silhouette of an 1950’s or early 60’s wiggle dress, but with the brazen sexiness of a retro grindhouse heroine. Layering garments of varying opacity and texture a game of skin hide and seek for the viewer.

My Photoshoot tip | Contrasting garments with different finishes and opacity helps the camera capture detail when photographing an all black outfit. Meaning you won’t turn into a big dark blob!

Scroll down for a full outfit breakdown.

Wardrobe and photography style can create give the same location a whole new mood. Check out my Cadillac Dreams post to see the set we shot just before this one – same location but a totally different vibe!

Start your engines! Velvet DeCollete mixes classic pinup with sexy grindhouse style in this bad girl photoshoot featuring a sleek and sexy Cadillac.

The upside of shooting near a dog park? Our then-puppy Echo got to ride along. Look how liddle she was!

We adopted Echo from an animal rescue shelter after falling in love at first sight ( After I was adamant we’d look at lots of dogs haha). It’s lovely to have photos before she grew up all big and serious looking, I can’t believe she was ever this tiny.

Cadillac Dreams | Hollywood Inspired Pinup Photoshoot

Bad girls may have more fun, but Paramount girls get away with it.

Inspired by the elegance of classic Hollywood and it’s movie starlets this is the sister set to Start Your Engines | A bad Girl Photo Shoot. Shot in the same location with the same magnificent Cadillac this set takes style inspiration from the publicity shots of 1930’s – 1950’s cinema stars. (With a few ‘paparazzi’ style shots thrown in for fun and accuracy).

The Inspiration

Back in the golden age of Hollywood film companies like Paramount and MGM would arrange photographers to snap their new stars at home ( usually not even their real home!) and at social events. These not so candid images were vintage equivalent of an intentionally unintentional looking celebrity Instagram photo.

My outfit inspiration was a chic movie star. Is she attending a cocktail party as some luxe resort? Heading to a rendezvous with her lover? Or is she on her way home, in the clothes she wore the night before? Either way, her studio will cover up any indiscretions.

Inspired by these totally posed but supposedly unexpected publicity photos, we shot a mix of classic glamour and paparazzi style images. This is one of the first photoshoots I worked with Froger on and it’s still one of my favourites today.

How beautiful is the vintage fawn skin bag in the photo above? I nicknamed it ‘The Bambi Bag’. Unsurprisingly it’s part of La Vonne’s personal collection, alongside the fur stole.

Oh and did I mention Elvis stopped by? He’s such a hoot!

Living The Pin Up Mermaid Dream

Living The Pin Up Mermaid Dream

What did you want to be when you grew up? A princess, a fireman, a racecar driver? A mermaid?

I wanted to be a florist (until extreme hayfever came along. Universe says No.), but I still felt like a kid when my mermaid tail arrived.

That’s right, I bought a mermaid tail.
I wore it to the beach.
In winter.
It was freeeeeeeeezing.
But so, so worth it.

Actually I bought two tails and a monofin. After trying and failing to buy locally due to horrific customer service, I ordered the Liquid Sun Gold and Catalina Green tails from the2tails.com. Shipping and currency conversion from the United States were a bit of a killer, but I was stubbornly set on having them by this point.

I contacted 2Tails about sizing as the adult tail measurements looked too large for me. They strongly recommended I go with the adult size. Unfortunately it is a bit loose around the hips and very loose around my 26″ waist. I fold the excess fabric down inside but I could have sized down to the teenage tail.

My styling for this shoot was inspired by mermaids from vintage advertising and pinup illustrations. I left most of my hair to it’s wild natural curl with a Mermaid Lagoon inspired roll in the front. I custom made the the clamshell bra and mermaid shell hairpiece. Don’t the pearly tones and neutral coloured shells work beautifully with the golds and bluey greys of the tail, sand, sky and sea?

If you’d like your own mermaid bra ( available with or without straps ), hairpiece or colour coordinated set be sure to get in touch!
I was silly enough to run out of spirit gum, so I spray glued mine on for these photos. 10/10 do not recommend. The removal pain was real.

I haven’t worn the green mermaid tail for a photoshoot yet, just in the pool, but I’m lending it to the fabulous Mrs Greatnews for her photos soon! I can’t wait to see her owning her pinup mermaid glory.

Before I go, can we get a high five for my awesome husband? He took these photos when the photographer ( who requested the shoot ) didn’t show up!

See You Under The Mistletoe | A Christmas Pin Up

Merry Christmas Darling!

If you celebrate Christmas I hope you’re with those you love, doing things you love next week. In my case that’s family time with waaaaaay to much food, and cuddles with my niece and nephews. (Good thing we took these photos before the eating began!).

Please drive safely this festive season, have or be a sober driver and look after yourselves. If you have extra please think of those who aren’t so lucky. Christmas and the New Year can be a very tough or lonely time and it doesn’t take much to make a big difference in someone’s life.

On a lighter note – here’s me channeling Ms Claus! Should I put you on the naughty or the nice list this year ?

Is this what you wanted for Christmas? ( That little box sounds like diamonds, must be for me …)

Golden Age Glamour

Golden Age Glamour: An evocative phrase, bringing to mind diamantes and satin gloves, fluffy boudoir mules and furs. Nothing makes you feel more glamorous.

A side note on bras | This bra was too big in the band for me, but I also found the cups just weren’t the right shape for augmented breasts! Any recommendations for vintage style bras that work for ladies that have had some help?

Retro Wedding Dress Parade

So Clementine has these wedding dresses that fell off the back of a truck.

No, really. Her friend found them in a giant plastic bag in the road, and actually does think they fell off the back of a truck. The obvious solution? Promptly deliver dresses to Clementine because lets face it, she needs nine retro wedding dresses.

Anyway, fancy dress aside she’s not going to get a lot of use out of these leg o’ mutton sleeved beauties so they’re destined to be recut into  more … wearable … designs. (Personally I hope she keeps the plastic beaded fringing, it’s fantastic!). But before the dismantling begins I got to model them for some lovely ‘before’ photos.

Here’s a selection of my personal favourites for your 1980’s fashion enjoyment.

retro 1980's wedding dress | Velvet Decollete

This top one’s part Disney princess, part evil queen. Look at those sleeves. The one below made me feel like a frilly sea cucumber and is my absolute favourite of the lot!

The lace neckline, those sheer sleeves, if this dress had fit I may have tried to steal it. Sadly it’s being held in with about 20 pins in the back! It reminds me of the Swan Princess animated movie.

And lastly who doesn’t want to loll around in a bed full of wedding dresses?

Huge thanks to Lavonne at Tock Tick Vintage for letting us shoot in your adorable B&B (that’s right ladies, you can stay the night there!) and Clementine for asking me to play dress ups. You know I love it.

Clemetine will be sharing the rest of the dresses we photographed as she redesigns them. Make sure you like her facebook page to see them!

It’s Art Darling | Renaissance Meets Pinup Photography

It’s Art Darling | Renaissance Meets Pinup Photography

Adendum 13.03.2016 | Since I wrote and published this post things have changed. Many members of the vintage and pinup scene I know and adore have come forward with experiences of unprofessional behaviour, outstanding debts and broken contracts in their dealing with Zandy J Photography. Zandy also broke our contract by failing to provide any of the high res images that were promised from my shoots.

This is not okay.

In my line of work and so many others professionalism and honesty are everything. I will not be working with Zandy again until these matters have been resolved. I hope those who have been inconvenienced and emotionally or financially hurt by her actions are heard and I offer them my support.

Zandy J pinup photography was my photographer homegirl.

She took a chance on me when I was green as a bean, giving me the experience I needed to develop my modelling style. Our early shoots gave me a portfolio that lead to wonderful relationships with other photographers and creatives. Needless to say, I’m a huge fan of her photographs.

Zandy was also the first person to shoot me nude. She was keen to emulate renaissance paintings (one of my favourite periods in art) and assured me the results would be tasteful fine art. Still, it was not a decision I made lightly.

Now It’s one thing to wander around naked at home, chocolate biscuit and cuppa in hand, but a studio is another matter.  I found posing nude simultaneously vulnerable and empowering. On one hand you’re exposed, baring yourself to the judgement of others. Anything could happen. On the other, you’re embracing your form, exploring your femininity / masculinity and hopefully realising that being naked isn’t explicitly sexual. I’d definitely do it again, but only with a trusted few behind the camera.

We also played with a huge vintage fan I scored in an op shop. I love these photos and Zandy’s editing of them.

Pink Fur and Pouts

Pink Fur and Pouts

Pink fur
Pink beret
Black lingerie

Imagine a Parisian cabaret performer – the type you’d find backstage at a smoky vintage nightclub, reading poetry and drinking espresso. She’s my inspiration for this shoot with Zandy J.

I had such fun styling this look. Searching for a contrast between sweet hyper-femininity and shameless sex appeal I met my old nemesis…pink. I’ve never been a pink lovin’ gal ( swearing off it for over a decade) but there was something about the soft sensuality of these fur cuffs that wouldn’t be ignored.

They made me feel vampy and playful all at once. Like a 1940’s man-eater cooing in the ear of a well dressed mob boss.

Oh la la…

Daydreaming of You

Daydreaming of You

Sometimes you need to take time out for yourself. Time to lounge in the sun, drink some lemonade and plan your next adventure.

2015 is a year of adventures for me. I’m pushing myself to be braver, try harder, trust more and believe I can achieve. It’s tough and tiring but I’ve made little steps towards completing my goals. Inspired by local pinup beauties like Miss Victory Violet, Miss Charlotte Cake and Soda Fontaine I’ve applied for calenders, shoots and submitted for magazines. It hasn’t always worked out, but I’m proud of myself for trying and I know one day I’ll get there!

Basically what I’m saying is, well, failure isn’t failure. Failure is just eliminating a path that doesn’t lead to success so you can find one that does. I’ve learnt that behind every inspirational woman (or man) is a string of events that they aren’t known for, but that made them who they are. Be who you are. Work towards who you want to be.  Try, learn, and try again.

This post hasn’t actually gone where I intended, but that’s okay. It was supposed to be a summary of my goals for the year, but maybe this semi – inspirational spiel was something I needed to tell myself as well!

Leopard print and kisses,

Velvet

Sunday saw my first shoot with Mike of Froger Photo and the lovely LaVonne of Tock Tick Vintage. It was such a fun day, things got weird, I got lost in the Narnia of LaVonne’s store buying pretty things, oh, and we took some photos!

The photos are being edited and sent off to various publications in the hopes of achieving ‘published pinup’ status, but I do have one or two I can share in the meantime.

These are from the first set we shot. Poor LaVonne is a natural camp mum – adjusting garters with my derriere in her face and holding camera-flash-thingies in awkward places without complaint. She’s so enthusiastic about her vintage collection you really must check out Tock Tick  if you need anything (When I was there she had 73 pairs of gloves!…She now has 72…).

Mike had a mannequin idea lead to a few giggles on my part and some great photos on his. He gives really useful direction which as a model can be the difference between an okay pose and a rockin’ pose.
