My Super Cute 1950’s Halloween Outfit

My Super Cute 1950’s Halloween Outfit

I intended to have this post out before Halloween, but (obviously) that didn’t happen, so lets say it’s a nightmare before Christmas.

I bought this adorably spoopy cartoon spider print fabric at Halloween last year. I didn’t get a chance to sew up an outfit at the time, but it was on the top of my pile for this October!

Construction & Design

Halloween calls for boldness and fun, and so did the super cute spider print! I contrasted the printed cotton with vintage orange linen from my stash for vibrancy and graphic appeal.

The natural fibers of these fabrics makes them perfect for the humidly warm October days in New Zealand. (Which means they’re also perfect for summer, when I’ll be wearing this because everyday is Halloween!)

The Top

I used my trusty Simplicity 1426, with a few size adjustments and different straps. The cups don’t sit as smoothly as the version of this top I made in cotton sateen, I may add some foam cups at a later stage. I stitched in a nude bra strap hook and eye set for the back closure, which ended up almost invisible!

The Skirt

The skirt is a classic self drafted circle skirt. I decided on a contrast waistband to emphasise my waist, with a back zip and hook and eyes. After cutting out the skirt I cut the top out of the leftovers – a great way to make the most of fabric when you’re using a pattern with small pieces!

Vintage Pinup girl Velvet DeCollete talks about sewing her cute spider print halloween skirt and top set, a 1950's skirt and top using self drafted and

Hellooooo darlings!

Firstly, apologies for the break in blogging.
I’ve been going through a very busy and stressful time for the last few months and needed to take a step back to avoid burning myself out.

Secondly, I’m baaaaaack!
While I’d originally planned to have these posts out before Halloween, it just didn’t happen. But I know that everyday is Halloween for ya’ll as well, and better late than never right!?

So let’s get back into some fun, spooky, retro style…

The Concept

We shot this set with Froger on the same day as my Spider Girl set. It was the first time I’d modeled alongside Rose Halfpenny, so we basically just winged it!

Rose is very much a stunning modern model – tall, incredibly slim and catwalk ready – while I’m petite, curvier and have a very vintage aesthetic. So this should could have looked kinda disjointed.  We created a cohesive look that combined our personal styles using monochrome outfits, combining modern and vintage influences, and shooting in black and white.

I styled a look focused on creating interest with layers and textures.  Vintage and fetish inspired modern pieces married sheer fabrics with leather and patent finishes, topped with my bespoke zebra stripe (faux) fur and muff. I really wanted to embody a juxtaposition of demureness, sexuality and outlandishness a la John Willie and Ryan Heshka.
Rose wore reproduction 1950’s lingerie paired with a gritty modern jacket and boots.

Vintage Witch | 1970’s Inspired Outfit

Vintage Witch | 1970’s Inspired Outfit

It’s October now (how did that happen!?), the month where I dress like the love child of Stevie Nicks and the spirit of Halloweens gone by.

Halloween aligns with spring here in New Zealand and isn’t widely celebrated, so I dream of a spooky autumn Hallow’s Eve surrounded by pumpkins and crimson leaves. While I hope to one day spend October in the USA or Europe, for now I  make do by making my wardrobe and life even spookier than usual.

What else could you expect from someone who lives in a haunted hotel?

This vintage witch outfit is inspired by the dreamy white witches of the 1970’s, using their crystals and spells for love and healing.

THE OUTFIT

1970s romantic vintage witch outfit Velvet DeCollete

It’s fairly simple as my outfits go. Just a hat and a dress.
No gloves, no shoes, basic accessories.
But with a dress like this, who needs ’em?

This bewitching dress is a vintage gothic dream. Inky black satin falls in glossy folds and the cut is impeccable. Delicate latticework on the shoulders and yoke creates just the right amount of texture and definition. The double sleeves are my favourite feature, the silhouette created by that cape-like oversleeve is so dramatic!

Created by iconic New Zealand designer Annie Bonza, this gown is one of the most precious in my collection. Owning such a beautiful piece of Kiwi fashion history is a humbling experience.  Considered a pioneer of boutique fashion, Annie’s signature ‘doodle’ style consists of braiding, ribbon, beading, embroidery and hand painting clothing with Māori and Polynesia influences. You can see some of that trademark braided lattice on this dress! Her designs are held in collections at Te Papa Museum and won awards at the Benson & Hedges Fashion Design Awards in 1971 and 1989.

If you’re not familiar with Annie Bonza, I recommend you visit this New Zealand Fashion Museum page to find out more about her.

I made this witch hat from an old pre-loved felt hat I had lying around. Its crown is softly pointed, in a wearable  ‘daily witch’ style. The fluttery pink flowers are two hairflowers that I clipped to the grosgrain band for a romantic, feminine finish.

(Keep scrolling to find a quick tutorial for reshaping your own hat!)

I tied a dusty pink grosgrain ribbon around my neck to carry on those soft femme vibes, threw on a few silver rings and pronounced this outfit done!

HAIR & MAKEUP

In keeping with the romantic 1970s influence I chose a simple makeup look.  A swipe of pale green eyeshadow, bold liquid eyeliner and long lashes, with white eyeliner pencil on the inner rim to create that bright eyed effect. I did apply false eyelashes to the edge of my bottom lashes for the first time! I loved the bottom lash effect, but I wish I’d blended the edge in with liner a bit more.

Cheeks and lips are dusted with subtle peachy pinks, and brows are softly defined.

I left my hair in its natural curly state, and backcombed the bottom half for fluffy volume.

DIY VINTAGE WITCH HAT

1970s vintage witch hat diy

I don’t know about you, but  cheap plastic witch hats make me cringe. They’re not sustainable, they don’t look good and the number of them that end up in landfill every Halloween hurts my soul.

Good thing ethical witches like you can make a vintage inspired witch hat with a wave of your wand! Or at least with nothing more than a thrifted felt hat and your own two hands.

Make your own vintage style pointy witch hat

  1. Find an old felt hat. I used a thrifted one that bought a few years ago. I forgot to take a photo before I started, but it had a standard round crown, and had become a bit faded on my hat rack, which doesn’t matter if you’re making it into a vintage witch hat!
Now stick that hat upside down in a pot or bowl of hot tap water. Make sure the whole of the crown is submerged, I plonked a bowl in mine to stop it floating back up. ( The yellow in the water is just dye from the hat, don’t panic if this happens. )
  2. Once the crown of your hat is totally soaked through and warm, you can start shaping it! Put an old towel on your bench to catch the excess water and start gently stretching and pulling the crown into it’s new shape. If it starts drying out, just pop it back in the hot water for a minute.
I created the pointed shape by holding one side of the crown against my benchtop like in the photo, and then pulling on the top side to stretch it out. I worked my way around the crown like this, making sure I kept my fingertips where I wanted the point to be.
  3. Every now and then check your shape and use your hands or the side of a bowl or vase to smooth our any unwanted dips or bumps. You can also lightly wet the brim and reshape that if you want to!
  4.  Try on your damp hat and make sure you like the shape. Then leave it somewhere warm and sheltered to dry – I left mine in the sun on my deck.

Now your hat is reshaped trim is with ribbons and flowers, paint it, glitter it, whatever you want!

Reshaping a felt hat into a diy vintage witch hat

Don’t feel like you have to stick to wide brimmed hats either! I also reshaped an old felt fedora into a 1920’s influenced witch hat.

Wet Look | Boardroom Meets Bathtub Kink

Wet Look | Boardroom Meets Bathtub Kink

I have some really weird ideas sometimes.

Ya’ll can probably imagine how I plan most of my shoots; outfits are tried on, hair and makeup planned and poses considered. But sometimes I just show up with a suitcase of clothes and go ” Hey Mike, I had this really fucked up idea. It might not work but…”

This was one of those shoots.

Velvet DeCollete styles vintage hair and makeup with modern kink, wet look stockings and dangerously high stiletto heels

Shoot Concept

Office bitch meets bedroom kink, only it’s in the bath.

Why? No idea.
Mainly because it looks cool. Sometimes that’s enough.

Seriously though, in my mind the textures of the stockings, shirt, bathtub and water looked interesting together. I also like to get out of my pin up comfort zone and make absurdly odd art. The weird ideas don’t always work, but they keep me on my creative toes! I like to think they keep you guys thinking too, imagining scenarios to explain the sitation.

Pinup model Velvet DeCollete wears pvc stockings, black patent fetish heels and a white shirt in the bath

Alternative pin up model Velvet DeCollete poses in a bathtub wearing pointy toe black shiny stiletto heels

Outfit Details

This whole fucked up situation was sparked by my PVC stockings. I’ve had them for aaaaaaages, but never wore them because I didn’t know what to wear with them except more PVC, and that seemed a bit…basic. Then it struck me – like any garment, the key to wearability was balance. Or no pants.

I decided to play it safe, balancing the fetishy wet look stockings with a button down shirt and pussy bow tie. And no pants. (Who needs leg prisons anyway amiright?.) A black and white colour scheme keeps the outfit cohesive, while the shirt and tie reference power dressing and boardroom style. I feel like the normality of the shirt counteracts the low brow connotations of the PVC thigh highs, giving the viewer an opportunity to view them in a different light. Layering a PVC bikini under the shirt contrasts sexuality with formality and adds visual interest.

Obviously this outfit needed some fierce shoes to finish it off, so I borrowed the heels of death from Mike’s kit. They’re three sizes too big, but the look still works darling!

Black & White Glamour | Pin Up Photoshoot

What’s black and white and glam all over?
Me, with my fancy pants and giant fluffy stole.

From Coco to Audrey to Cruella De Vil, black and white fashion has always been simultaneously bold and chic.

Often employed for understated elegance or graphic mod style, black and white can be effortlessly cool. However exaggerated glamour is more my jam! Extremes of femininity and texture have inspired my upcoming collectionof uber fluffy faux fur mega stoles! This boa/stole hybrid that looks like a sexy skunk is one of the pieces I’ve been working on, and trust me, it’s so decadently soft and enveloping.

Marlene Dietrich, Cabaret and our Queen Dita Von Teese sparked the concept for this shoot. I wanted to reference the black and white publicity shots of Hollywood’s golden era, but with an intimate, personal edge.

Love monochrome but hate boring outfits? I layer textures and shapes to create a black based outfit that looks luxe, not lazy. Styled specifically to be shot in black and white, the textural blacks are offset with two bold pops of white; long gloves and my faux fur.
Pairing soft, wide leg trousers with a constricting corset and thick wool jacket creates a silhouette that’s feminine while referencing masculine style elements.

Can you believe the satin trousers and jacket are both from the oppy? ( That’s a thrift shop to my American friends ). So is the hat, an equestrian dressage topper found by my mother in a small town St. Paul’s.

Cadillac Dreams | Hollywood Inspired Pinup Photoshoot

Bad girls may have more fun, but Paramount girls get away with it.

Inspired by the elegance of classic Hollywood and it’s movie starlets this is the sister set to Start Your Engines | A bad Girl Photo Shoot. Shot in the same location with the same magnificent Cadillac this set takes style inspiration from the publicity shots of 1930’s – 1950’s cinema stars. (With a few ‘paparazzi’ style shots thrown in for fun and accuracy).

The Inspiration

Back in the golden age of Hollywood film companies like Paramount and MGM would arrange photographers to snap their new stars at home ( usually not even their real home!) and at social events. These not so candid images were vintage equivalent of an intentionally unintentional looking celebrity Instagram photo.

My outfit inspiration was a chic movie star. Is she attending a cocktail party as some luxe resort? Heading to a rendezvous with her lover? Or is she on her way home, in the clothes she wore the night before? Either way, her studio will cover up any indiscretions.

Inspired by these totally posed but supposedly unexpected publicity photos, we shot a mix of classic glamour and paparazzi style images. This is one of the first photoshoots I worked with Froger on and it’s still one of my favourites today.

Pinup vs Personality | The Story Behind My Beauty School Dropouts Photoshoot

Pinup vs Personality | The Story Behind My Beauty School Dropouts Photoshoot

Maintaining balance in my pinup life is hard.

Earlier this year I met one of my Instagram followers in real life. We chatted for a while, and she said ” Oh my god you’re such a goof! I never would have guessed.” I was floored. How could you not know I’m a total dork?
That night I took a long look at my social media feeds – curated collections of professional photoshoots and event selfies – and realised how. My social media personality was unbalanced.

As a new pinup starting an Instagram profile, maintaining the illusion of  pinup perfection seemed vital. As if real pinups never went barefaced, and people would judge me if they knew I couldn’t wear makeup everyday. But trying to present only one side of my personality created an imbalance.

It’s a like building a house of cards; pay too much attention to one side and the whole tower will topple.

Since creating my social media profiles my concept of pinup has evolved. I’ve relaxed into my own brand of pinup, melding my kooky personality and glamour girl aesthetic. But the idea that I could NEVER post a makeup free selfie stuck, making sharing my daily life a no go. As a result, people who haven’t met me in person probably have NO IDEA what I’m really like.  I wanted to explore this personality vs appearance split in a photoshoot representing the concept.

pinup model Velvet DeCollete explores the two faces of pinup and her personaility in a photoshoot inspired by vintage playing card art - the Joker and the Queen of Hearts

A  deck of cards seemed the perfect analogy – The wildcard Joker and the regal Queen of Hearts packed into one box. A vintage box of course!

Inspired, I started working on pinup outfits inspired by 1950’s playing cards. You can find hundreds of examples on Pinterest , some of them works of art in their own right. The frolicking jesters and jokers below inspired my Joker costume. Aren’t they just darling!?

vintage playing cards, retro playing cards, 1950s playing cards, jester, pin up jester, vintage jester costume, old playing cards, jester cards, pin up photo shoot inspiration, harlequins, vintage harlequin, pin up harlequin

The Beauty School Dropouts and photographer Tony McKay  brought my idea to life . Their photoshoot packages offer cheesecake and screen siren posing styles in the same session, so I could shoot both costumes but have continuity in hair and makeup. On the day Miss Monique Sweet helped me get to grips with the cheesecake style so different to my usual alternative and glamour work (she also picked that bubblegum pink backdrop!). Letting my goofy side out in front of the camera was more challenging than I expected!

After choosing my two favourite images, Tony edited them onto vintage playing cards. A harlequin clad Joker and a bombshell Queen of Hearts – two faces of the same deck.

The photos are so cute! The jester set became my campaign images for Miss Pinup New Zealand 2017, with a couple of Queen images making an appearance. I haven’t decided exactly what I want to do with the cards yet, but I’d love to incorporate them into merch of some kind, what do you think? ( Seriously, would you like Velvet merch? Leave me a comment and let me know!)

Bright and crisp, the playing card photoset is markedly different from my other images, and I love how fun they are! Shooting with the Beauty School Dropouts and Tony had a bubbly, female focused environment. Fran working her makeover magic and pose coaching from Miss Viva Las Vegas 20 Monique makes it easy for anyone stepping out of their comfort zone. The photos were processed and delivered SUPER QUICK. 10/10 would shoot with the team again!

Nylon Stockings & Vintage Tease

Nylon Stockings & Vintage Tease

I’m all about the tease. Silky nylon stockings, a wayward bra strap and a cheeky grin appeal to me far more than brazen modern erotica. Not to say the modern stuff doesn’t have it’s place, it’s just not my place.

The Villa showcases all that soft vintage deliciousness. Capturing only natural light, these photos have a dreamy homemade feel, like a lazy rainy afternoon. The kind where you turn up the heater and don’t bother getting dressed.

Unsurprisingly, we photographed this set in a small renovated villa. I enter the scene wearing a peach silk chemise and knickers with vintage nylon stockings, but it does get somewhat naughtier. For those wishing to indulge Froger has compiled the full set into luscious E-book, available here. At just $15 NZD it’s a steal for all my USA and UK fans!

When I’m choosing clothes for a shoot I imagine the character I’m trying to portray. What would a cheeky 1950’s babe be wearing on a lazy afternoon with her lover? What would have her comfortable and confidant, laughing as he snapped some pin up photos with their Kodak Argus?

I settled on this soft peachy slip. It’s the kind of lingerie I’d put on under a dress, and then lounge around in after the dress hit the floor. Not wearing a girdle or suspenders was a deliberate choice. I think our flirty fifties character would have taken her girdle off by now, or maybe she’s only just getting ready to go out?

If you’re going to run illicit poker games, a derelict 1960’s camper van is the least suspicious location. And I’m all about subtlety…obviously…

The Shoot

This once cheery caravan was the quintessential backdrop to a 1960’s beach holiday. Froger and I made it anything but.
You see, photography locations aren’t about the hand you’re dealt, they’re about what you do with it. We do retro lingerie and grungy interiors, which means we make magic in locations others wouldn’t touch! I love that our shoots don’t use stereotypical pin up ‘pretty’ backdrops and studios.

The playing cards were among the scattered debris, covered in a layer of dust. Feeling nostalgic for the rainy day card games we put them to use. Playing in my knickers is the only way I’ll ever win at poker!

Pip & Pantalaimon Lingerie Review

Can we talk about this Pip & Pantalaimon bodysuit for a sec? IT’S. SO.CUTE.

Froger calls it the Bubblegum outfit, It’s custom made to match those glossy white and pink heels. While the shoes in his kit are always too big for my teensy feet, this bodysuit was made to fit me ( and any other model he shoots my size, so get in there ladies! ). Made in white stretch mesh and satin, it sports hot pink trim – straps, garters and contrast stitching.

Soft cup bras are more comfortable on augmented breasts than underwires, and this is no exception. No digging or pinching here! The bodysuit feels soft and snug, like a firm hug, giving less compression than serious shapewear while still smoothing the silhouette.  As a seamstress I’m telling you the pink spiral stitching on the cups and front panel is PERFECT. I wish I had a close up to show you but the sun washed out the detail in these shots.

Basically, I’ll be spending some of my hard earned cash on their lingerie. Because it’s niiiiiiiiiiice. Because I believe in supporting small businesses. Because Froger won’t appreciate me stealing this from his kit. And because twelve clip garter belts. TWELVE CLIPS ladies, you have no idea of the comfort.

*As usual, I didn’t get paid or sponsored to gush about this. I just get excited about sharing stuff I love with you guys!*

Power dressing is nothing new. From the Phoenician purple robes of the Romans to 80’s power suits, we’ve been using clothes to boost our confidence and social standing for thousands of years. Which got me thinking; what does power dressing look like to a vintage loving gal?

For me the answer was a well cut suit. The suit worn by a film noir vixen perched on a detective’s desk, knowing he’ll do whatever she asks. A suit that says you’re 100% business, and 100% woman. A suit you’d wear to the funeral of your fifth wealthy husband mysteriously dies.

Obviously I needed to make this suit.

The Suit

Drawing inspiration from 1950’s clothing company Lilli Ann, I sketched a figure enhancing peplum silhouette. The wide neckline, fitted waist and flared hip accentuate my hourglass figure, while the slimline pencil skirt puts a wiggle in my walk – I’m known for walking quite fast and this skirt definitely hobbles my stride a bit!  A textured black fabric with a woven pattern of golden roses balances the hyper feminine cut with dark glamour.

This is my first ladies suit ( I’ve made one trouser suit before ). Delayed for months due to costume commissions I finally finished it in time for the Duke and I’s seven year wedding anniversary. ( We stayed at Hotel Debrett and watched Horror at the Civic Theatre. ) There’s a tiny area of fit I’m not quite happy with in the jacket, but considering I had to fit it on myself I’m very happy with the result!

The Outfit

Two statement collars are better than one and the PUG Lauren top creates a striking inky black layered neckline.

No well dressed dame would be caught without gloves and hat.  The beaded gloves were a serendipitous find at Tock Tick Vintage long before I started the suit. Their glossy floral beading was too pretty to pass up!  The velvet tilt hat is from the Auckland Textile Fair. A band and bow of woven black straw circle the hat, and I added the veiling for extra sass.

My earrings are green and gold vintage clip ons . The frosted glass matches my eyes (a rarity) , and seems to glow from within . Classic back seam stockings, black leather Alonso Andretti shoes and a gold beaded clutch finished my 50’s power dressing dream.
