Feline Fine | 1970’s Pinup Vibes

Feline Fine | 1970’s Pinup Vibes

It’s not all about the 1940’s and 50’s around here ya know.
Sometimes I dress like a jungle cat and feel those sultry 1970’s vibes.

There’s something about the Seventies that’s just so glam. Not the fleuro daisy print costume shop Seventies, the cool Seventies. The Bianca Jagger wearing Halston at Studio 54 Seventies. How could you not fall in love with the booty shorts, big hair and exuberant debauchery of an era where cocaine was harmless and Donna Summers was queen?

I feel like this shoot is set in the wind down after a heavy night ( or day ) of partying. In that golden space where you’re tired but still riding the party high. Right before complete exhaustion and a killer hangover put you to bed for twelve hours.

Inspired by the metallic bronze paint and black interior of the Plymouth this outfit is all earthy neutrals and black. Natural wood, gold leopard print and carved bone bangles catch the evening light. Their textures balance my matte fabrics with the metallic sheen of the car, and pick up the gold of my vintage hoop earrings. Bigger is better in my book, but man are those clip on earrings heavy!

My shoes play with contrasting textures too. Leopard print satin sits above glossy black patent platforms and heels. ( Yes, you can wear two sizes of leopard together. As long as they’re similar colours I figure they’re both neutrals right? ) These babies are my favourite shoes. Flattering on a shorter figure and reasonably comfy, I will legitimately cry when they eventually wear out.  I actually have the same style in all black!

All those different textures and patterns mean this sexy feline outfit photographs equally well in black and white or colour.

Before you go, take a moment to appreciate 1970’s leopard clad babes Donna Summers and Jerry Hall. Meeeee-ow! Two totally different ways of wearing our favourite feline neutral.

Pinup vs Personality | The Story Behind My Beauty School Dropouts Photoshoot

Pinup vs Personality | The Story Behind My Beauty School Dropouts Photoshoot

Maintaining balance in my pinup life is hard.

Earlier this year I met one of my Instagram followers in real life. We chatted for a while, and she said ” Oh my god you’re such a goof! I never would have guessed.” I was floored. How could you not know I’m a total dork?
That night I took a long look at my social media feeds – curated collections of professional photoshoots and event selfies – and realised how. My social media personality was unbalanced.

As a new pinup starting an Instagram profile, maintaining the illusion of  pinup perfection seemed vital. As if real pinups never went barefaced, and people would judge me if they knew I couldn’t wear makeup everyday. But trying to present only one side of my personality created an imbalance.

It’s a like building a house of cards; pay too much attention to one side and the whole tower will topple.

Since creating my social media profiles my concept of pinup has evolved. I’ve relaxed into my own brand of pinup, melding my kooky personality and glamour girl aesthetic. But the idea that I could NEVER post a makeup free selfie stuck, making sharing my daily life a no go. As a result, people who haven’t met me in person probably have NO IDEA what I’m really like.  I wanted to explore this personality vs appearance split in a photoshoot representing the concept.

pinup model Velvet DeCollete explores the two faces of pinup and her personaility in a photoshoot inspired by vintage playing card art - the Joker and the Queen of Hearts

A  deck of cards seemed the perfect analogy – The wildcard Joker and the regal Queen of Hearts packed into one box. A vintage box of course!

Inspired, I started working on pinup outfits inspired by 1950’s playing cards. You can find hundreds of examples on Pinterest , some of them works of art in their own right. The frolicking jesters and jokers below inspired my Joker costume. Aren’t they just darling!?

vintage playing cards, retro playing cards, 1950s playing cards, jester, pin up jester, vintage jester costume, old playing cards, jester cards, pin up photo shoot inspiration, harlequins, vintage harlequin, pin up harlequin

The Beauty School Dropouts and photographer Tony McKay  brought my idea to life . Their photoshoot packages offer cheesecake and screen siren posing styles in the same session, so I could shoot both costumes but have continuity in hair and makeup. On the day Miss Monique Sweet helped me get to grips with the cheesecake style so different to my usual alternative and glamour work (she also picked that bubblegum pink backdrop!). Letting my goofy side out in front of the camera was more challenging than I expected!

After choosing my two favourite images, Tony edited them onto vintage playing cards. A harlequin clad Joker and a bombshell Queen of Hearts – two faces of the same deck.

The photos are so cute! The jester set became my campaign images for Miss Pinup New Zealand 2017, with a couple of Queen images making an appearance. I haven’t decided exactly what I want to do with the cards yet, but I’d love to incorporate them into merch of some kind, what do you think? ( Seriously, would you like Velvet merch? Leave me a comment and let me know!)

Bright and crisp, the playing card photoset is markedly different from my other images, and I love how fun they are! Shooting with the Beauty School Dropouts and Tony had a bubbly, female focused environment. Fran working her makeover magic and pose coaching from Miss Viva Las Vegas 20 Monique makes it easy for anyone stepping out of their comfort zone. The photos were processed and delivered SUPER QUICK. 10/10 would shoot with the team again!

Nylon Stockings & Vintage Tease

Nylon Stockings & Vintage Tease

I’m all about the tease. Silky nylon stockings, a wayward bra strap and a cheeky grin appeal to me far more than brazen modern erotica. Not to say the modern stuff doesn’t have it’s place, it’s just not my place.

The Villa showcases all that soft vintage deliciousness. Capturing only natural light, these photos have a dreamy homemade feel, like a lazy rainy afternoon. The kind where you turn up the heater and don’t bother getting dressed.

Unsurprisingly, we photographed this set in a small renovated villa. I enter the scene wearing a peach silk chemise and knickers with vintage nylon stockings, but it does get somewhat naughtier. For those wishing to indulge Froger has compiled the full set into luscious E-book, available here. At just $15 NZD it’s a steal for all my USA and UK fans!

Chemise | Galliano
Stockings | Vintage fully fashioned nylons, thrifted

When I’m choosing clothes for a shoot I imagine the character I’m trying to portray. What would a cheeky 1950’s babe be wearing on a lazy afternoon with her lover? What would have her comfortable and confidant, laughing as he snapped some pin up photos with their Kodak Argus?

I settled on this soft peachy slip. It’s the kind of lingerie I’d put on under a dress, and then lounge around in after the dress hit the floor. Not wearing a girdle or suspenders was a deliberate choice. I think our flirty fifties character would have taken her girdle off by now, or maybe she’s only just getting ready to go out?

Reading in Lingerie | New Problems in Medical Ethics

Pin Up Fetish Model | Velvet DeCollete

You’re going to love this photo set. Oh and there’s now a second edition of Reading in Lingerie.

A foreword on these photos |
In my vintage collection is a set of medical journals; “New Problems In Medical Ethics”. Translated from the French Cahiers Laennec, ( a set of texts from 1934) they present ‘morally problematic’ medical cases and the treatments prescribed by the Catholic medical practitioners of the time.
Topics discussed include why adultery is morally and legally abhorrent when committed by women ( but acceptable from men ), how birth control emasculates men and destroys marriages, and how homosexuality is a mental illness to be treated using electrotherapy.

As a modern woman believing in gender equality and ownership of ones own body you can imagine I strongly disagree with these views. Especially as they are still being spouted by certain groups! Apparently so does our dog Echo, who promptly destroyed one of the books when my back was turned. (That’s the book you see being torn later, I’d never damage a salvageable book!). Being photographed with the journals while portraying behavior they deemed unacceptable in women seemed an appropriate way to express my opinion.

So here you have it. A lingerie clad, empowered, makeup wearing woman who has no fucks left to give for outdated “moral illnesses”. Enjoy.

The Purple Kimono | A (Vintage) Lingerie Addict’s Diary

The Purple Kimono | A (Vintage) Lingerie Addict’s Diary

Purple Vintage Kimono | Velvet DeCollete

I’m a huge fan of dramatic garments with trailing hems and sleeves. It could be that they make me feel like one of Tolkien’s elves, or it could just be that I’m short so anything long tends to be a bit… trailey. Either way swishing around in a voluminous robe makes me feel elegant.

Naturally this Kimono and I get along just fine. When La Vonne from Tock Tick Vintage pulled it out as a modesty robe at a photoshoot she wasn’t expecting me to adore it. In fact it wasn’t even for sale.  Luckily for me La Vonne is a total sweetheart and surprised me with it at our next photoshoot!

With no tag or makers name, I have little knowledge about this garment. I can tell you it’s a printed synthetic fabric. The seams are encased and the center back seam has a white contrast casing running the length of the kimono. The deep bright purple looks amazing with black lingerie.

In these images I’m wearing a leather belt with a small flared peplum over the hips. Mixing and matching new and vintage pieces with contrasting textures creates an eclectic style that brings vintage pieces into the modern era.

Vintage Style at the Winter Garden

Winter Pinup | Velvet DeCollete

Sometimes when life gives you lemons you pull out the tequila.

It was time for my yearly chop. Determined to have Miss Victory Violet work her magic on my tresses before she leaves our humble shores I trotted off to Killer Hair. Miss V snipped and sprayed and a couple of hours later my tangled curls were a few inches shorter and impeccably groomed. I sashayed down the stairs feeling a like a 1940’s dame and … enter the lemons. Lemons of the thundering rainstorms and gale winds variety. The variety that destroys manicured hair in seconds. But I wasn’t going to let some lousy weather waste a perfectly good hair day.

Froger wrapped it up in a noir novel kinda way, I’ll pass it over to him from here…

“So when one of my fave models is getting her hair done and wants to grab a few shots afterwards …well, you jump in the car and hit town don’t you?

Yeah the weather was atrocious. Torrential rain landed just as Velvet left the salon. It blew every notion I had of getting some ultra cool shot down at Silo Park so we thought fast and decided to try the Winter Garden. It’s a horrific cliche I have to admit and I have avoided that kind of place like the plague but I didn’t have any other clever idea that might have worked in the circumstances. I mean I did think a shot in front of the big red bill boards on Symonds Street would have been pretty awesome but it would have ruined the “do” and pissed off one of my go-to models.

It was dark too. Like headlights on at 4 o’clock dark.  I didn’t bring any gear except my camera and zoom lens. Honestly I thought we’d lost any opportunity of getting a shot. And damn, Velvet looked fantastic. Anyway I haven’t tried shooting like this before. It’s a combo of action camera work and a flukey bit of luck. 200mm lens, high speed auto drive, high ISO, slow as fuck lens speed, rock steady aim and having your model face the merest smidgen of light that there was (which was almost none). She did her thing and I just pressed the trigger like a stupid monkey. But I’m really liking some of the shots. And I think I managed to avoid the Winter Garden backdrop sufficiently to maintain a wee bit of photographic street cred.”

Working with the weather instead of fighting it we dashed out in the next clear patch. I was shivering in glacial winds and Froger was lying on his jacket on the wet ground. I can’t speak for him but I think it was worth it. Time pressure, cold light and windy conditions created results so different from my previous shoots; I absolutely adore these more spontaneous images.

Very Vintage Day Out 2016 | Photo Safari & Outfit of the Day

Apologies on the delayed VVDO post, I’ve been focused so completely on producing the Blue Moon Ball everything else just slipped away. So here, delayed but not forgotten, is a brief outfit review and photo safari images…

In true VVDO tradition the photo safari was organised chaos! Photographers and models vied for unobstructed backgrounds and cars that matched their outfits. There were giggles and goofs as huge petticoats invaded photos and photographers backed into each other – but in the end there were wonderful photographs and killer vintage fashion.

My Vintage Outfit

When choosing this years ensemble I wanted a contrast to last year’s dark dress and makeup. A glorious blue lurex dress hanging in Tock Tick Vintage answered the call. Ensnared by its sparkle and texture I tried it on and immediately fell in love with how the modest cut balanced the showiness of the fabric. La Vonne found a pillbox hat close enough in colour to match so both came home with me!

Inspired by the clean, coordinated style of Jackie Onassis I chose white accessories to keep the blue dress in the limelight, and pantihose over stockings as a nod to their huge popularity upon commercial release in the early 1960’s.

Onstage during the Best Dressed Vintage category.

The Authentic Vintage category finals of the Best Dressed competition ( photos by Norrie Montgomery) were so much fun. Every year NZ pin ups pull out some simply amazing outfits from the 1940’s to the 1960’s. I’m in awe of Natalie Louise’s sorbet coloured ensemble you can see in the background!

I had such an awful morning with contact lens and eyeliner horrors my makeup could have been better, I’m just glad I managed to get myself together in time! Do any other pinups struggle with the glasses vs contact lenses debate? My daily glasses aren’t retro styled and my milk bottle lenses are far too expensive to buy an extra pair for pinup . As a result I feel obliged to wear contact lenses that irritate my eyes something awful.

The highlight of my day was (as always) the food. Miss Charlotte Cake had the most scrumptious little cakes that looked every bit as delightful as they tasted, while The Tea Ladies put on a much needed cuppa in the afternoon. While there was quite a delay in the high tea service, these things happen and cannot be predicted no matter how hard you work! Overall a lovely way to spend a day!

It’s Art Darling | Renaissance Meets Pinup Photography

It’s Art Darling | Renaissance Meets Pinup Photography

Adendum 13.03.2016 | Since I wrote and published this post things have changed. Many members of the vintage and pinup scene I know and adore have come forward with experiences of unprofessional behaviour, outstanding debts and broken contracts in their dealing with Zandy J Photography. Zandy also broke our contract by failing to provide any of the high res images that were promised from my shoots.

This is not okay.

In my line of work and so many others professionalism and honesty are everything. I will not be working with Zandy again until these matters have been resolved. I hope those who have been inconvenienced and emotionally or financially hurt by her actions are heard and I offer them my support.

Zandy J pinup photography was my photographer homegirl.

She took a chance on me when I was green as a bean, giving me the experience I needed to develop my modelling style. Our early shoots gave me a portfolio that lead to wonderful relationships with other photographers and creatives. Needless to say, I’m a huge fan of her photographs.

Zandy was also the first person to shoot me nude. She was keen to emulate renaissance paintings (one of my favourite periods in art) and assured me the results would be tasteful fine art. Still, it was not a decision I made lightly.

Now It’s one thing to wander around naked at home, chocolate biscuit and cuppa in hand, but a studio is another matter.  I found posing nude simultaneously vulnerable and empowering. On one hand you’re exposed, baring yourself to the judgement of others. Anything could happen. On the other, you’re embracing your form, exploring your femininity / masculinity and hopefully realising that being naked isn’t explicitly sexual. I’d definitely do it again, but only with a trusted few behind the camera.

We also played with a huge vintage fan I scored in an op shop. I love these photos and Zandy’s editing of them.

Daydreaming of You

Daydreaming of You

Sometimes you need to take time out for yourself. Time to lounge in the sun, drink some lemonade and plan your next adventure.

2015 is a year of adventures for me. I’m pushing myself to be braver, try harder, trust more and believe I can achieve. It’s tough and tiring but I’ve made little steps towards completing my goals. Inspired by local pinup beauties like Miss Victory Violet, Miss Charlotte Cake and Soda Fontaine I’ve applied for calenders, shoots and submitted for magazines. It hasn’t always worked out, but I’m proud of myself for trying and I know one day I’ll get there!

Basically what I’m saying is, well, failure isn’t failure. Failure is just eliminating a path that doesn’t lead to success so you can find one that does. I’ve learnt that behind every inspirational woman (or man) is a string of events that they aren’t known for, but that made them who they are. Be who you are. Work towards who you want to be.  Try, learn, and try again.

This post hasn’t actually gone where I intended, but that’s okay. It was supposed to be a summary of my goals for the year, but maybe this semi – inspirational spiel was something I needed to tell myself as well!

Leopard print and kisses,

Velvet
